Teaching Online – A course for Teachers and Lecturers

Blended and online courses are fast becoming the norm in schools, colleges and universities. A good deal of research has gone into making sure that students know how to learn in the virtual classroom, but teacher training has not caught up yet.

This course is designed to help learning providers develop best practice in synchronous and asynchronous situations and give them the tools that are needed to craft and deliver teaching that will promote engagement, progression and retention.

The course will start by looking at the theory behind online pedagogy before moving into how to use
the online classroom providing effective teaching one to one and for small and large groups of
learners. Other elements such as creating forum posts that will encourage student participation,
timely intervention to keep the discussions moving and effective moderating with be covered.
Transposing face to face teaching materials and lesson plans can be time consuming, this course
looks at strategies to reduce that time and to make the materials already created work in the online
space. The idea of persona is also covered which involves looking at how to create and maintain an
appropriate online presence in the online teaching spaces.

Finally, there will be advice on and approaches toward digital wellbeing, how to deal with being part
of the 24/7 availability of the online campus and how to draw the line between working online and
living in the real world.
