Searching for Sappho

Sappho, the enigmatic Greek poet, was one of the most prolific poets of the ancient world, and yet very little of her work survives. But what remains is lyrical and beautiful and heartfelt. This seminar will look at particular pieces of Sappho’s poetry through the lens of time and consider what the sources can tell us about her and the world she lived in.

There will be a consideration of some of the main secondary sources and what they argue, and we will talk about how scholarship has changed in relation to female poets through the 19th , 20th and 21st centuries. No particular translation is needed to take part in this seminar but it would be useful to do some advance background research into Sappho and her work.
