Cuneiform was originally developed in Mesopotamia and is the earliest known writing system. It was used to articulate a number of ancient language including Sumerian, Akkadian and Hittite. This course teaches the basics of Cuneiform and advances to look at a number of key texts including fragments of the Epic of Gilgamesh, various letters, inscriptions and spells. Being able to decipher these key texts opens a window into a world of political and social order and unrest, wars and treaties; relationships with the gods and the day to day musings of the ancient Near East.
There is no set book as all materials will be provided but students should purchase the Cuneiform calligraphy practice notebook and either have access to a stylus graphic tablet or the ‘paint’ function on their computer.
