WORLD MYTHS – ANCIENT GREECE

Mondays, 1:00-2:30pm starting 3rd June 2019 for six weeks.

£75 for a six week course. No prior knowledge or experience is needed to enjoy this gentle introduction to mythology. Starting in Ancient Greece, the ‘World Myths’  series will explore the fascinating world of mythology – looking at who told the myths and why, the truth behind them and what they meant in their own time and today. Later courses will look at a range of myths from Europe, Africa, Asia and the Americas.

Mondays, 4:45-6:15pm starting 3rd June 2019 for six weeks at The Centre, Birchington

£75 for a six week course. This course builds on ‘Latin for Beginners’ and expands the working knowledge of Latin into more complex grammar and texts. We will move onto the past and future tenses and work with a range of Latin texts from which you will learn about the life of Romans, their beliefs and politics..

SHAKESPEARE IN LOVE

£75 for a six week course. This short course looks at Love in the plays and sonnets of Shakespeare. Through a mixture of visual, audio and written sources, the story behind the great loves and losses contained in his work will be discovered. It doesn’t matter whether you are an expert or a complete newbie, there is something for everyone in this fascinating course which takes a fresh look at Love in the work, life and times of Shakespeare. The set book for this course is any version of the Complete Works of Shakespeare. available from Amazon or alternatively, it can be purchased from the tutor on the first day of the course, by prior arrangement.

READING FOR PLEASURE

Tuesdays 11:30am – 1:00pm at The Centre, Birchington.

£3.50 weekly. No prior reading or preparation is needed for this friendly and relaxed group. Each week we will talk about different authors their work. Short sections of texts will be provided to look at over a cuppa and a slice of cake.

PHILOSOPHY

No prior knowledge of Philosophy is needed to enjoy this course.  Philosophy need not be a complicated set of texts in undecipherable language, but instead they are a starting point for discussion.  This is the first of a series of Philosophy courses which starts with Greek philosophers such as Plato, Aristotle, Heraclitus, Democritus and Socrates.  You will learn the theories of each philosopher and explore how they might be applied to modern problems faced today which will offer a new perspective on these ancient views.

ART APPRECIATION – BAROQUE – CLASS FULL

Wednesdays, 9:30am-11:00am starting 5th June 2019 for six weeks at The Centre, Birchington.

£75 for a six week course. No prior knowledge or experience is needed to enjoy this gentle introduction to art history. This course considers the art and architecture of the Baroque period and will help you see the great works of art, its artists and their models, in new ways. Each week we will consider the work of different artists such as Caravaggio, Rembrandt, Vermeer, Poussin, Sirani and Leyster. Colour handouts are included. Later courses will look at a range of art and artists from the 13th to the 21st century.
