The Odyssey- ONLINE
Saturday 18th July 2020 2-5pm

‘Tell me, O Muse, of the man of many devices, who wandered full many ways …’.  Homer’s  Odyssey is one of the most important pieces of literature in the Western canon.  This epic poem tells of gods and heroes and monsters and mayhem as Odysseus finds his way home.  It was only about 450 miles from Troy to Ithica but because of the anger, jealousy and spite of the gods, combined with the curiosity, greed and often stupidity of Odysseus and his men, they travelled in excess of 5,000 miles.  This interactive seminar is a close reading of the Odyssey which looks at the plot, characters and meaning of the poem within the context of the Homeric world.  This three hour course is part of the series of Saturday Afternoon Seminars which take an in-depth look at the seminal works and concepts of the ancient world. Having taken part, you will have a thorough understanding of the poem, why it has been part of the literary canon and a subject of study since the 5th century BC, and the ability to use the text as primary source evidence in academic work at any level.

It is not necessary to have read the Odyssey in full before attending the course, but it would be useful to have researched the plot and have an idea of who the main characters are. This information can be obtained from online encyclopaedia-style sources.
