Ancient Greek Translation Week 5  - Hesiod, Works and Days (Selected Lines)
£25

All translations of primary sources are different because they are influenced by the interpretation and the bias of the translator.  Being able to sidestep the hearsay and go direct to the primary source enables the independent interpretation which is so vital in academic work.  Scholars at all levels can enhance their understanding of the ancient world by looking at it through the eyes of the original writers instead of relying on the interpretation of other translators.

Each of the ancient writers has their own unique style and so to be able to work with that text, a good understanding of the complexities of that style is necessary.  Looking at a range of different sources provides an excellent grounding to be able to work with texts by other authors.

These translation master classes will teach you how to approach particular ancient sources from pre-reading to inform your thinking and then unpicking the grammar and language to uncover the syntax, nuance and language choices that together constitute the meaning of the text.  You will be taught how to use Lexicons, grammar books, verb books and on-line dictionaries.

These classes are designed for intermediate-advanced level Ancient Greek learners who want to expand their skill and learn how to tackle extracts from the texts that underpin the study of the ancient world.  If you have no knowledge of Ancient Greek, you are advised to do the Introduction to Ancient Greek course in advance.  If you are unsure about whether your level of Greek is suitable for these classes, please email Gina on gina@ginamay.co.uk

Each week we will translate an extract from a different source which will be provided in advance via email.  Before each class you will also receive some suggestions for background reading which will inform your thinking and provide a context for the source.
