Ancient Egyptian Gynaecology
Saturday 18th January 2020 2-5pm £35

As a result of the ancient Egyptian’s meticulous record keeping, scholars have been able to learn a great deal about the diagnosis and treatment of disease in ancient Egypt from the extant medical papyri. In this course we will concentrate on gynaecology, examining the evidence from two different angles. The main sources of evidence that we will look at come from gynaecological sections of the Kahun and Ebers Papyri as the two most comprehensive extant works on this topic. The aim of the course is to examine the ancient Egyptian perception of the female reproductive system. We will also look at the role and gender of the ancient Egyptian physician, the diagnosis and treatment of gynaecological ailments, the importance of fertility as well as methods of contraception and abortion.
